Los liberales de Europa: THE EUROPEAN FREE STATE PROJECT

Our Vision
Some of us believe this is sufficient, some of us think the state could be reduced even more (or should be abolished at all), but we all agree that we do not accept more government than stated above.

Unfortunately, the current state of affairs is substantially different: Caught up in the claws of the constantly growing monster state, our freedom is taken away piece by piece, day by day. Libertarianism is a seldom flower, blossoming primarily on a small number of web sites and mailing lists. Given the actual majorities, it is not very likely the situation will change somehow soon.

We are not accepting that misery as god-given and immutable, instead we committed ourselves to pursue a common goal: creating an environment where we enjoy as much freedom as possible. We want freedom in our lifetime.

The Idea

Being a small bush in a big forest, you will often be overlooked or trampled upon. But if all bushes of the whole forest would be placed on a single patch of land, they would form a respectable brushwood, which could not be ignored that easily.

We transfer this idea to the field of politics: After enough participants are found, we all together move to a specific area. Having arrived there, we use our democratic rights to change the local policy in our sense: By actively campaigning for our ideas amongst the inhabitants, and through usage of our voting rights, we can form a libertarian society and make this dream come true - in our lifetime.

Doesn't that sound better by far than just discussing the same theoretical concepts with the same people again and again? Time has come to act, not talk.

How?

Every participant signs our Statement of Intent, stating that he or she shares our vision and is willing to move, when the time has come. After signing the Statement of Intent, the signee will be bound by his word of honour to act accordingly (though there will be an option to nullify the signature in specific situations, e.g. if the conditions are changed).

There are several phases of the project: After overstepping the first threshold of, for example 5.000 signatures (the actual limits are not decided yet), a ballot will be held to determine the actual target area. After the ballot, more signatures will be collected until the second, final threshold (for example 20.000 signatures) is met.

When this limit is reached, every participant is called upon to move to the target area within the next five years: The Freestate is born.

We are currently working on the exact wording of the Statement of Intent, the Participation Guidelines and the other conditions (thresholds etc.) - if you are interested in actively participating in this process, you are invited to do so (just have a look at our current plan, and drop us an e-mail).

Where?

In principle, a Freestate could be erected anywhere in the world. Since we are citizens of the European Union, we are concentrating on its member states and current membership candidates (hence the name European Freestate Project), for different reasons:

In the EU, citizens have the right to take their residency in any member state, and to work there, without the need for a permission. When moving to any non-EU country, there would be the risk of not getting the necessary permits (especially if the current government of that country learns of our motivation).

In general, the member states of the EU offer better possibilities to work and earn money, than for example a developing or 3rd World country. The economic situation of the target area is of great importance, since the majority of the participants will not be able to live just from of their fortune.

A certain cultural equivalence between the participants and the inhabitants of the target area is necessary for being accepted and to be able to convince the local population of our ideas. In most developing countries, the population follows a fundamentally different culture with little or no respect for the idea of individual freedom. Moving to such a country in order to create a Freestate would be ripe for hassle or even armed conflict.

Last, but not least important is the fact that most people are not willing to move too far from their friends and relatives, or to face too much uncertanity or risk, so a relatively near move within the European Union is very likely to attract more participants than a move to a country far away.
State, country or town?

Basically, the Freestate could be erected on a town/local, county/regional or state level. The possible degree of freedom rises with the size of the goal, but there are also more participants required to succeed.

Since that question is not easy to decide, the choice will be left to the participants, because the most relevant fact is whether a specific option will or will not attract enough participants.

By signing the contract, the signee can state whether his or her signature is valid for a local, regional or state level move, based on the list of candidate areas for each option.
